Weekend volunteer tree planting on Talla Craig

22.02.2026

After the previous weekend was cancelled due to freezing conditions, we were treated to a mostly dry and pleasant temperature given the time of year.
Starting at the top of Talla Craig, I made my way down towards Talla water where there was some fabled "good soil" for planting oaks.
Good soil apparently being signified by a brown hue indicating the presence of iron in the soil.
I struggled to locate any great soil for the oaks but scattered some where this brown soil condition was met, just above the drumlins above Talla water.
Andy later reported that he had found good soil within the drumlins and had planted there.
I managed to remove a couple of sitka spruce that were found growing in my planting area and vowed to source a small saw for future visits as it was a pain to remove the large one by mattock.
